Surprises 4/31
Today it happened. I've been reading False Prince to my fourth graders for the last couple of weeks. I read it over Christmas break in one day and knew that I HAD to share this gem with my kids. If you haven't read it, I won't spoil the story. But, do know, that there is a surprise that caught me completely off guard. Ever since I started reading it aloud, I've been waiting to get to this part. I've been waiting to reveal the truth.
Well, today was the day. Gasps and squeals of surprise filled the room. Groans erupted next when I closed the book at the end of the chapter so we could move on to math. They are clamoring for more. I can't wait until tomorrow.
Thanks to Ruth and Stacey at Two Writing Teachers for hosting Slice of Life Challenge.
Julie -- isn't that the most precious time, when you literally could hear a pin drop and they all are holding on to their seats in anticipation! What joy to be in a classroom community of readers!
ReplyDeleteI can hear the groans. What fun!
ReplyDeleteAh, the depths a great read aloud! Love it!
ReplyDeletePerfect place to stop, leave them wanting more and a reason to come back tomorrow. Hmmm, I may have to look for this book. Thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteDaily read alouds are one of the things I miss the most about not having my own classroom. And I'll add The False Prince to my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite time of the day is when I get to do my read-aloud. It's also the quietest time of the day! It is something I will ALWAYS make time for in my classroom because it is so rewarding.
ReplyDeleteI could just picture your class...thanks for sharing their enthusiasm!
ReplyDeleteThis is in my TBR pile! Don't you just love it when you get to THAT part of a book? The one you've been waiting to share with them? It's the best part of the day when that happens!
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs. Johnson,
ReplyDeleteIt was so exiting to know the actual truth. It was a real page turner. I think that is my favorite part in the story. How about you?
From,
Gabby
Ah cliffhangers!! After the moment of suspense before a surprise is revealed, the second most suspenseful moment while reading a book out loud has to be right after the surprise is revealed because now you have given them that taste of something sweet, and they can't wait for more.
